      Walt Whitman was one of the first public speakers on the assassination 
of Lincoln, and his assessment of Lincoln as a great man ponders the role of 
martyrdom in the making of heroic legend. The great poet delivered this 
lecture on the 14th, 15th, and 16th anniversaries of Lincoln's 
assassination, in New York, Philadelphia, and Boston, respectively. The text 
herein is taken from the lecture's first book appearance in 1882. HOUMES pp. 
104-105. One of 300 copies in a limited edition printed by Norman Forgue, 
designed by E. Willis Jones. Bound in black leather over boards with 
gilt-stamped spine title, gilt device on upper board, marbled endpapers. One 
faint rub at top fore corner of upper board....... $150.00
