Chicago: University Publishing Company, 1921. First printing, Original
cloth, Octavo, xii, 302 pages, black and white photographic plates. Fine, No
dust jacket.
Anecdote-rich autobiography of a cattleman in Nebraska, Wyoming, and
the Dakotas in the late 19th century. Bratt was born in Staffordshire,
England but came to the United States during the Civil War, arriving in July
of 1864 at the age of 21. He first lived in Chicago and New Orleans before
moving west. Includes recollections of Lincoln's funeral, being shipwrecked
in the Gulf of Mexico, the massacre at Ft. Phil Kearny, surviving a raging
prairie fire in 1874, and many other exciting scenes colorfully told. HOWES
#B725; RAMPAGING HERD #310. Bound in dark blue cloth over boards with spine
and upper board titled and decorated in gilt, upper board also decorated
with an orange setting sun, top edge gilt. Minor extremity rubs. Fore and
bottom edges of textblock left untrimmed by publisher. An exceptionally
