First edition. Octavo, contemporary marbled 
boards with green morocco spine nicely titled in 
gilt and ruled in compartments, marbled 
endpapers, silk marker. 204 pp, two folding 
plates (of music) at rear. A heroic 13th Century 
epic poem, "now for the first time translated 
exactly after the Jenaer document... together 
with the old songs, translation, linguistic and 
historical explanations..." Text in German. Some 
mild browning to text, small bookseller's ticket 
on front endpaper; a very good, clean  copy in an 
attractive period binding. ¶ The basis for 
Richard Wagner's opera 'Tannhäuser' - the full 
title is Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf 
Wartburg (Tannhäuser and the Singers' Contest at 
Wartburg). Wagner commenced his opera in 1843 and 
it was first performed in 1845.
