*BAILLIE, Major F. D*., /*MAFEKING A Diary of the Siege*/, Archibald
Constable & Company, London, 1900, 1st edition, 8vo, pp. 299. Bound in
original red cloth with facsimile of one pound Mafeking "siege note"
laid on to front board. Tipped-in to the inside rear board is a very
fragile "Special Siege Issue" of the December, 1899, /The Mafeking Mail/
newspaper, apparently in facsimile, as only one side is printed.
Unfolded, the broadside measures 38 x 32 cm.
Inscribed in ink on the front free endpaper: "To F. W. Hurford / From
Major Baden Powell - 10th Royal Hussars". This Baden-Powell was the
brother of the more famous Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, the
"Hero of Mafeking", and the founder of the international Boy Scouts
movement. Major Baden-Powell, although not part of the defending forces
at Mafeking, was a member of the relief forces which reached the town in
May, 1900. Major Baillie was the correspondent for /The Morning Post/
and /The Daily Graphic/. Virtually from the outbreak of the war in 1899,
Baillie kept a diary, which he turned into this book after hostilities
concluded
Former owner's bookplate to inside front board, and other former owner's
small rubber stamp to bottom of front and rear free endpapers. With 17
full page black-and-white illustrations (three on coated paper with
tissue guard), all taken from /The Daily Graphic, /and all in very good
condition/. /The boards of our copy show some shelf wear, and light
soiling. The binding is cracked between pages 144/145, although the
hinges and joints are tight. Contents clean and tight - no pages are
loose. Overall, in good condition externally; and good plus condition
internally.
