*BAILLIE, Major F. D*., /*MAFEKING A Diary of the Siege*/, Archibald
Constable & Company, London, 1900, 1st edition, 8vo, pp. 299. Bound in
original red cloth with facsimile of one pound Mafeking "siege note"
laid on to front board. Tipped-in to the inside rear board is a very
fragile "Special Siege Issue" of the December, 1899, /The Mafeking Mail/
newspaper, apparently in facsimile, as only one side is printed.
Unfolded, the broadside measures 38 x 32 cm.

Inscribed in ink on the front free endpaper: "To F. W. Hurford / From
Major Baden Powell - 10th Royal Hussars". This Baden-Powell was the
brother of the more famous Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, the
"Hero of Mafeking", and the founder of the international Boy Scouts
movement. Major Baden-Powell, although not part of the defending forces
at Mafeking, was a member of the relief forces which reached the town in
May, 1900. Major Baillie was the correspondent for /The Morning Post/
and /The Daily Graphic/. Virtually from the outbreak of the war in 1899,
Baillie kept a diary, which he turned into this book after hostilities
concluded

small rubber stamp to bottom of front and rear free endpapers. With 17
