Clemens). Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing
Company., Chatto & Windus, London: 1880. First
edition, 1st issue of the frontispiece, captioned
"Moses". The sheets bulk 1 5/8" (Blanck's state
A); the portrait frontispiece is Blanck's state B
(no definate priority) and the binding is
Blanck's state B (again, no priority). Octavo,

Innocents Abroad, p. [632]. Inserted portrait

border. This copy has a small number [11]
blindstamped beneath the publisher's device on
the back cover - Blanck notes that some copies
have numbers blindstamped here, probably to
identify a specific subscription agent, but
mentions that only the numbers 0, 4, 7, 8 and 88
have been observed. Foxing to frontispiece and
tissue guard, minor marks to endpapers, a tight,
clean, bright copy in superior condition for such

2...... TWAIN, Mark [pseudonym of Samuel
Langhorne CLEMENS, 1835-1910). ADVENTURES OF
HUCKLEBERRY FINN (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). By Mark
Twain. With One Hundred and Seventy-Four
Illustrations. New York: Charles L. Webster and
Company. 1885. First American edition, very
early issue. The title leaf is a cancel (state
2), p. [13], "Him and another man" listed at p.
88 (state 1), p. 57, eleventh line from the
bottom reads " ...with the was..." (state 1), p.
155, final five in page number is lacking (state
1), p. 283 is a cancel (state 3), portrait
frontispiece in Blank's state 2, with the imprint
of the Heliotype Printing company, with the
tablecloth not visible, and with the words "Karl
Gerhardt, Sc." on the finished edge of the
shoulder. It should be noted that copies with the
title leaf uncanceled and the copyright notice
dated 1885 (not 1884, as here) occur only in the
prospectus and in a set of advance sheets and
that no copy of the published book has been seen
or reported with the copyright date of 1885, that
p. 283 is found in state 1 only in the prospectus
and in the leather-bound copies and that no copy
of the published book has been seen or reported
with the page in state 2 (with the defaced
plate). As well, the frontispiece portrait is an
insert and bears no relation to the sheets of the
book; thus, we offer a very early, or perhaps the
first published issue of this great work. Octavo,
original green cloth stamped in black and gold,
pp. (i) - 366, final blank. Front free endpaper
affixed to the paste-down, pp 151-154 slightly
loose and with internal stains, cloth a bit
frayed at base of spine and with light wear at
the spine head and corner tips; a very good copy. $1,500.00

3...... TWAIN, Mark [pseudonym of Samuel
Langhorne CLEMENS, 1835-1910). PERSONAL
RECOLLECTIONS OF JOAN OF ARC by Sieur Louis de
Conte (Her Page and Secretary) Freely Translated
out of the Ancient French into Modern English
from the Original Unpublished Manuscript in the
Archives of France by Jean Francois Alden.
Illustrated. New York: Harper & Brothers
Publishers. 1896. First edition. Ascribed to
Mark Twain on the cover and spine, but no mention
of his name on the title page. 2nd state, with
the first entry on the publisher's ad leaf at
rear (p. 363) reading "Some Books for the
Library. George Washington" and with the "Memoirs
of Barras" on the verso (p. 464) listed as being
ready in four volumes at $15.00. Octavo, original
red cloth stamped in gold and silver. [xvi], 459
+ [2] pp ads. 35 plates. Spine panel just a
trifle tanned, a very nice copy, nearly fine. ¶
It seems almost needless to comment that the work
is original and that both the 'Sieur Lous de
Conte' and 'Jean Francoise Alden' are pseudonyms
for Samuel L. Clemens. $325.00
