Alexander Gerard: An Essay on Taste ... The Second Edition, with
Corrections and Additions. To which are annexed, three dissertations
on the same subject, by Mr de Voltaire, Mr D’Alembert, and Mr de
Montesquieu. London: Printed for A. Millar, London; and A. Kincaid and
J. Bell, Edinburgh, 1764. Full period goatskin, spine with raised
bands, gilt-stamped rules and morocco spine label; 12mo (17 cm); [2] +
viii + 298 pp. ESTC T91348.
Ex- Maynooth College Library (Ireland) with its ink stamp on three
pages; bumping and wear to the corners, hinges cracked but secure;
lacking front free-endpaper and half-title; occasional spots, soiling
and mild staining (most noticeable on the first few leaves); otherwise
sound. An important and influential effusion of the Scottish
Enlightenment, admired by the likes of Alison, Hume, and Adam Smith.
Gerard's work was also significant for including the first appearance
in English of essays on aesthetics by Voltaire, Montesquieu and
D'Alembert.
