Alexander Gerard: An Essay on Taste ... The Second Edition, with  
Corrections and Additions. To which are annexed, three dissertations  
on the same subject, by Mr de Voltaire, Mr D’Alembert, and Mr de  
Montesquieu. London: Printed for A. Millar, London; and A. Kincaid and  
J. Bell, Edinburgh, 1764. Full period goatskin, spine with raised  
bands, gilt-stamped rules and morocco spine label; 12mo (17 cm); [2] +  
viii + 298 pp. ESTC T91348.
Ex- Maynooth College Library (Ireland) with its ink stamp on three  
pages; bumping and wear to the corners, hinges cracked but secure;  
lacking front free-endpaper and half-title; occasional spots, soiling  
and mild staining (most noticeable on the first few leaves); otherwise  
sound. An important and influential effusion of the Scottish  
Enlightenment, admired by the likes of Alison, Hume, and Adam Smith.  
Gerard's work was also significant for including the first appearance  
in English of essays on aesthetics by Voltaire, Montesquieu and  
D'Alembert.
