[&] was for a time employed by the state of Virginia as its agent ... Jefferson himself provided part of the material for this work ... Mazzei's explanation of the legal system of the U.S. is based on a seven-page letter written by Jefferson ... at Mazzei's request. . .Vol. 3 gives an account of Jefferson's attempts to introduce into Virginia the wine-producing grape. Jefferson wrote from Paris: 'There will be another good work, a very good one, published here soon by a Mr. Mazzei who has been many years a resident of Virginia ...
