HAYDEN, Robert. ANGLE OF ASCENT: NEW AND SELECTED POEMS. Inscribed to
President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter. New York: Liveright, (1975). First
Edition. Hayden's inspiring collection of verse featuring symbolic
portraits of fabled revolutionary Crispus Attucks, Amistad mutineer
Joseph Cinque, Malcolm X, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick
Douglass. Hayden would be remembered, poet Michael Harper contended, as
the first African-American lyricist "of perfect pitch" and as Poetry
Consultant to the Library of Congress, a position held during the first
two years of Jimmy Carter's presidency. In 1985, this position became
the Poet Laureate, thus making Hayden the first African American to
serve as Poet Laureate of the United States. This copy is INSCRIBED and
SIGNED by the poet to the President and the First Lady on the title
page: "For Jimmy/and Rosalynn/with admiration/and the hope/that all
their endless endeavors/will be blessed--/Bob." A remarkable association
copy from the library of a President. Fine in close to Fine
dustwrapper. $1,500.00
