Tasso, Torquato. LA GERUSALEMME LIBERATA. Figurata da Bernardo Castello.
Con le Annotazioni di Scipion Gentili, e di Giulio Gustavini, et li Argomenti
di Oratio Ariosti. Genova: Giuseppe Pavoni, ad Instanza di Bernardo
Castello. 1617. Folio. 2 parts in 1. (16),256;72,36,(4)pp. Double column text.
Complete with 2 engraved titles, each with portraits, and 20 plates after
Bernardo Castello. Old calf, rebacked; the edges of the covers quite worn, short
splits at top of hinges. Some light text soiling. $850.00 (trade discount
allowed)
A very notable early 17th century Italian illustrated book, but not a great
copy. In addition to the 20 full-page plates the "argomento" text of each
canto is within an ornate woodcut border. Note: In this copy the
preliminaries (8 leaves) have been divided between the two parts (the text of
"Gerusalemme Liberata" and the "Annotationi"). At the beginning is the first engraved
title and 1 leaf of preliminary text, and at the beginning of the second
part is the second title page and 5 preliminary leaves. The book was originally
published with all of these 8 leaves at the very beginning.
