Lery, Jean de. HISTOIRE D'UN VOYAGE FAICT EN LA TERRE DU BRESIL, Autrement
Dite Amerique. Contenant la Navigation & Choses Remarquables... Avec les
Figures, Reveue, Cor. & Bien Augm. de Discours Notables en Ceste 3. ed.
(Geneva): Antoine Chuppin. 1585. 8vo. (68),427,(15)pp. Index & Errata. Two leaves
of the index misbound. Lacking the folding woodcut plate. Text illustrated
with 8 full-page woodcuts, and with 5 pages of musical notation. 17th century
calf, gilt spine. Extremities a bit rubbed, but overall quite sound. Text
with occasional old soiling, the final leaves with a brown stain along the top
margin. Starting at around p. 370, a small wormhole slowly enlarges to
affect (at worst) a portion of the last 3 lines of text at the bottom of the
page; the readability of some words is affected. $2,500.00 (trade discount
allowed)
An important early work (the first ed. is 1578) on Brazil and the author's
experiences with its native peoples. The third ed. of 1585. is notable for
being the first to present the famous melodies (music) by Lery, called "the
first Brazilian musical document in existence." See Borba de Moraes I p. 403.
Sabin 40150. European-Americana 585/43a.
