New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1856. sixth edition, Original cloth, Octavo, xxiv, [25]-348 pages, Fold out maps, charts. Very good.
      Lt. Maury essentially founded the science of oceanography with this book, which gave ship captains the best routes based on winds and currents at various seasons as compiled by Maury from thousands of old maritime logbooks. Originally published just a year earlier, this copy is from the Sixth Edition, "An Entirely New Edition." Collated complete with all 13 plates (9 folding). See ALBION, p. 83 (starred item). Bound in original brown cloth over boards with spine titled in gilt, ship vignette in gilt on upper board, both boards bordered in blind. Contemporary prior owner bookplate of S. Everett Bailey, Cambridge, Maine, on front pastedown. Some stains to exterior cloth, gilt spine titles darkened, minor extremity wear. Scattered foxing inside and a water tide stain to top inner margin of all leaves. Hinges and joints sound....... $100.00
