[La Fayette, Madame de]. THE PRINCESS OF CLEVES, The Most Famed Romance 
Written in French by the Greatest Wits of France. Rendered into English by a 
Person of Quality, at the Request of Some Friends. London: for R. Bentley and 
M. Magnes. 1679. 8vo. (4),259,(7)pp. With A1, the license leaf before the 
title, and with the final 3 leaves of ads. Cont. calf, spine extremities & 
hinges rather worn, as well as the corners of the covers, but the hinges are 
sound. Housed in a brown cloth box with morocco label.     $3,000.00 (trade 
discount allowed)
The very scarce first English translation of this famous novel first 
published in 1678. It was written anonymously by the Comtesse de Lafayette with 
the assistance of the Duc de la Rochefaucauld. It is a story in which we see 
the triumph of will and duty over passion; it is known as her masterpiece.
