Narrative of the 1874 expedition of Charles
Tilstone Beke (1800-1874), an English explorer
and Biblical scholar, to Egypt in order to
determine the real position of Mount Sinai which
he thought to be a volcano. The first three
chapters were written by Beke with the entire
work edited by his wife. It is perhaps his most
important book. "Dr. Beke treats of the
traditional Mount Sinai, and its rivals within
the Peninsula of Pharau; of the non-identity of
the Mltzrulm of Scripture with the Egypt of
profane history, its position, and that of the
I*and of Midian, and of the dynasties of Manetho,
and especially those of the shepherd kings, or
Mitzrites. The account of the expedition Itself,
and of Dr. Beke's sojourn In Egypt, is given in
Dr. Beke's very characteristic letters on his
last journey." Provenance: Library of the Bangor
Theological Seminary (their gift bookplate) [from
Library of] Roswell Dwight Hitchcock (his
signature dated 1879). Hitchcock (1817-1887) was
a pastor, educator, and vice president of the
American Geographical Society.

down, seminary gift bookplate on front pastedown,
glue marks on rear pastedown where pocket was
removed, small repair to inner edge and outer
margin of map; plates bright without foxing, a
very good copy. [36390] $850.00
