HUGO, VICTOR. CHATIMENTS. "Londres, 1862." 3/4 leather with marbled boards, approx. 5 X 4 inches, raised bands, gilt rules, spine in 6 panels elaborately decorated in gilt, name "Balch" at foot of spine, marbled end papers, edges tinted, a very attractive copy. Large signature on title page of Thomas Balch, 48 Avenue Gabriel, "Paris." (Balch, an American historian, studied in Paris.) This famous series of poems, satiric, angry and indignant, was written in defiance of the coup by Louis Napoleon Bonaparte in 1851. Hugo retired to the Channel Islands and did not return to France until the overthrow of the monarchy in 1870. The first edition (1852) was published with a false imprint (Geneva & N.Y.) as was this one, and is a great rarity. This present edition of 356 pages is recorded by OCLC only at the British Library. (There was a "Nouvelle Edition" of the same year, and another edition with only 248 pages, also in 1862. They are all rare.) Find another !
