in the plate by Churchill. Bound in publisher's original blue cloth 
double-ruled in blind to front board, spine lettered in gilt and top 
edge stained blue. The original dust jacket is present (yellow with red 
lettering). Five thousand copies of this important work were printed for 
publication on June 24, 1938. Each of the speeches is preceded by its 
individual divisional half-title and diary of events. Published in 
America as "While England Slept" by G. P. Putnam's Sons. Woods A44(a).

Approximately one-quarter inch of the top and bottom of the book's spine 
is sunned (where the dust jacket had been chipped). There are several 
small spots to the top edge of the text block. "Ghost" of front flap of 
dust jacket where it had been folded against the half-title page; 
similarly to the rear enpapers. Small bookseller's ticket to bottom of 
inside rear board. Front hinge slightly stressed (as from the book being 
pressed open), but hinges tight. Contents clean and tight. A good plus, 
to very good, copy. The dust jacket is quite chipped at the spine ends 
and along the top edges of the front and rear panels. The spine is 
darkened with some light spotting. The panels are not darkened but are 
somewhat soiled. The front flap has been clipped. Previous owner has 
applied clear tape to the inside of the dust jacket along the top edge. 
The jacket is in fair condition.
