*BRONOWSKI, Jacob and William Empson (eds.). /EXPERIMENT/ Number 1,
November, 1928.* Printed at The University Press, Cambridge, UK. 1928.
1st edition, wrappers. 8vo, pp. 48. Stitched card covers soiled, and
"thumbed" at corners. Contents clean and tight. A good copy of a very
scarce literary journal.
Jacob Bronowski was a 20-year-old mathematics student at the University
of Cambridge, when he and William Empson founded and co-edited the
literary periodical "Experiment". This is the first issue of the
short-lived journal (it expired in March, 1931), and which proclaimed in
unsigned prefatory remarks that "not a line in these pages has been
written by any but degree-less students or young graduates", who
included such soon-to-be famous writers as Bronowski, T. H. White (who
graduated from Cambridge in 1928 with a first-class degree in English)
and the famous literary critic Sir William Empson (who was 22 at this
time). There is also a contribution by someone named Louis Le Breton of
an article entitled "Renoir and Pure Painting": this is curious, because
the only Louis Le Breton of which we are aware was a French painter who
specialized in maritime scenes, and died in 1866. A literary "spoof",
perhaps? Other [real] contributors include Basil Wright (a noted
documentary film maker and film historian), Humphrey Jennings (another
documentary film maker and one of the founders of the Mass Observations
movement), [Sir] Hugh Sykes (international industrialist and investor)
and [Sir] Misha Black (architect and designer), who drew the green and
black design for the front cover of this, the first issue.
