PLUMIER, Charles. L'ART DE TOURNER, OU, DE FAIRE EN PERFECTION TOUTES
SORTES D'OUVRAGES AU TOUR... Paris: Aubouin, Riou, & Jombert, 1706.
First Edition. Second issue of the first edition of 1701, with a new
title page only and retaining the original title page as well. Folio
(10" x 14-5/8") bound in modern half morocco and boards; [30], 187 pages
plus plates. Illustrated with 72 full-page engraved plates after Plumier
and Rousseau, some by Bouchet. THE EARLIEST KNOWN TREATISE ON THE LATHE
and the first book to describe and illustrate previously secret
techniques of turning wood as well as metals, ivory, diamonds, etc. and
the tools and machines to be used. Further shown are objects to be made
in this way, such as vases, urns, knives, and snuff-boxes. Plumier spent
many years in America studying flora (he was the first to identify and
describe the fuchsia plant) and notes in his preface to this book that
while in America he worked on turning many of the instruments which he
describes and which were unknown in Europe at the time. Some
dampstaining and discoloration throughout but usually with no
significant impact on the plates. The top two inches of the spine
leather is lacking. Very Good or better copy of this important and
scarce book. $2,000.00
