ELEMENTS OF CHESS. Boston: W. Pelham, 1805. First Edition. Bound in 
modern quarter green goatskin; folding frontispiece of chess board in 
expert facsimile. The second book published in America on chess and the 
first by an American. To Americanize the game, the author suggested 
renaming the pieces: Governor for King; Captain for Knight; Pioneer for 
Pawn. Quite scarce especially when uncut as with this copy. Signature of 
Stephen North(?) dated 1826 on title page and old ink notes on three 
pages; corners of two leaves lacking resulting in partial loss of text 
in each case. Moderate aging. New endpapers. Nicely bound. 		$750.00
