MELVILLE, Herman. NARRATIVE OF A FOUR MONTHS' RESIDENCE AMONG THE
NATIVES OF A VALLEY OF THE MARQUESAS ISLANDS; OR, A PEEP AT POLYNESIAN
LIFE bound with THE STORY OF TOBY, A SEQUEL TO "TYPEE," BY THE AUTHOR OF
THAT WORK. London: John Murray, 1846. First Edition. Contemporary half
calf with matching corners and marbled boards and endpapers, gilt-ruled
spine with a new gilt-lettered black morocco spine label; xviii, 301
pages; no terminal ads. BAL 13652: Second Issue of page 19. Illustrated
with a map at page xviii. First printing of Melville's first book,
issued in an edition of 4,048 copies and preceding the American edition,
titled TYPEE, of the same year. Largely based upon the author's
experience living in the Marquesas after he deserted from the whaler
Acushnet in 1842. This copy has "The Story of Toby" sequel bound at the
end with a half-title page and continuous pagination. According to BAL,
the publishing history of this book "is further complicated by the
publication of an additional chapter, 'The Story of Toby,' which was
first published (not as a separate) in the United States in August,
1846; and, in London (as pamphlet) in October, 1846." BAL also notes the
earliest located advertisement for a printing with the sequel to 1
December 1846. Scattered, light foxing; slight pulling of the leather to
the top of the spine. Very Good or better.
Other than MOBY DICK, the most widely read of Melville's novels. $1,200.00
