James Macpherson: The History of Great Britain, from the Restoration,
to the Accession of the House of Hannover. Dublin: Printed for J.
Exshaw, D. Chamberlaine, J. Potts, W. Sleater, J. Williams, W. Wilson,
T. Walker, R. Moncrieffe, C. Jenkin, and M. Mills, 1775. Two volumes,
8vo (21 cm), in full period polished calf, morocco spine labels tooled
in gilt; 630 pp.; 588 + [50] pp; lacking table(?), if called for; with
an index. ESTC T65487.

A sound, handsome set of this history of Great Britain from the years
1660-1714. James Macpherson (1736-1796), Scottish poet, historian,
antiquarian and pen-for-hire in the service of Lord North's ministry,
earned his greatest fame (or notoriety) as the self-styled
"translator" and editor of the putative works of Ossian, whose
"discovery" in 1761 was one of the literary sensations of the 18th
century.
