Greetings Booklovers,

This is great... Your American Civil War customers NEED this. Tell them the
story: The A&ER Railroad was the vital link between Washington and the North
as Mr. Lincoln stood in his office, gazing at the heights across the Potomac
(and expecting to see Confederate artillery plumes at any moment), wondering
"Why don't they [Northern troops] come? why don't they come? Eventually the
7th New York DID come, and it was the regiment that saved the capital. And
it was by this route, via Annapolis, that they came. But that's a whole
other book. Mean time, here is the most complete history (to date) of the
completely underappreciated rail link between Annapolis and Washington--"the
railroad that saved the Union" (Can you tell this is has become personal?) :
~

the defense of Washington in April, 1861. The article includes several
interesting illustrations. Magazine is staple-bound and shows no significant
