Appleton and Company, N.Y. 1856, First American Edition: A Scarce and beautiful copy of Johann Fredrick Overbeck's "Holy Gospels". Illustrations are tissue covered, Frontispiece "The child Jesus In The Workshop of Joseph," others illustrations included are: The Annunciation of The Blessed Virgin Mary; John Is His Name; The Baptism of Christ; The Marriage In Cana of Galilee; The Call of Matthew; The Parable of The Prodigal Son; Christ In The House of Mary and Martha; Who Is The Greatest In The Kingdom of Heaven; Jesus Washing the Disciples Feet; John Leaning Upon the Bosom of Jesus; The Parable of The Ten Virgins; Peter's Denial of Christ; Herod and Pilate Are Made Friends; Bearing The Cross; The Burial; Appearance of Jesus to Thomas, forty in all. Text portion begins with "Proem" Palestine, by John G. Whittier. Arranged with the Gospels, interspersed with poetry by well known poets, and other writers of the 19th century, such as: Hymn On The Nativity, John Milton; The Epiphany, John Keble; The Cry of Children, & The Virgin Mary to the Child Jesus, Elizabeth B. Browning,  The Baptism of Christ, N.P. Willis (Nathaniel Parker Willis), Hymn of the Calabrian Shepherds, Mary & Martha, Lyra Catholica, The day of The Lord!, Charles Kingsley, Lazarus and Mary, Alfred Tennyson, The Triumphs of the Saints, Ancient Hymns, etc. Thirty eight quotes from "The Gospels,"  Fifty eight quotes from other sources. Johann Friedrick Overbeck (1789 - 1869), Lübeck, Vienna, German painter, designer and member of the Nazarene movement. Overbeck was a member of the Romantic School of painting, which came about during the period of the Romantic School of Literature. He was respected by the German painters living in Rome such as: Cornelius, Koch, K. Vogel, John and Philip Veit, Schadow, Eggers and others of the new school of national and religious characteristics in art. He started his art training in 1806 in Vienna, leaving for Rome in 1810 where remained for the rest of his life. In 1811 he won universal recognition for his Madonna.  Overbeck was the only painter who stayed true to the Romantic School's purpose; he adhered strictly to Catholicism and believed the principal of art should be devoted to the service of religion.Tooled calf with stamped gilt ornate title. Rubbing to boards and extremities, spine rebacked, front hinge professionally repaired. All edges gilt. Bright brown and blue e.p. Seven ridges to spine, chipping to various ridges, quarter inch chip to lower spine. Text and illustrations clean, text block solid. > A Devout Life, Written Originally in French by St. Frances De Sales, Bishop and Prince of Geneva with a Collection of His Maxims, An Introduction to, De Sales, St. Francis, R. Cross Printer, Dublin, 1795, 16th Edition: Introduction à la vie Dévote, originally published in 1609, Saint Francis' most widely received book is known as "Lectio Divina" or "Divine Reading" based on the Christian monastic practice of spiritual reading. Written in five parts, addressing each stage of the Christian spiritual journey.  "To Which is Added: The Conversation of D. Thaulerus with a poor Beggar, teaching us to resign ourselves to all Things to the Will of God." "Carefully compared with the original French, by an Eminent Divine. Considered to be a classic of Roman Catholic literature. Beginning as a series of letters to Mme, de Charmoisy, the wife of an ambassador of the Duke of Savoy. Saint Frances de Sales, (1567-1622), born at Thorens, in the Duchy of Savoy to a noble family. At the young age of 13 he had a personal crisis theological discussion on 'predestination'. A visit in 1587 to the Church of Saint Etienne des Gres cured his despair and began his life long devotion to God and his teachings. Saint Francis is considered the patron saint of the deaf because he developed a sign language to teach the deaf about God. Saint Francis was prolific letter writer, popular minister and engaging preacher who appealed to all classes of people. Although at the time of his ministry  it was a dangerous time in the Calvinist areas of France and celebrating mass was punishable by death, by the end of his life, he converted thousands of the Calvinists to Christianity by the end of his life.  Brown calf, front and rear joints cracked, front board slightly warped. Inside hinges tight, boards secure. Rubbing of extremities is mild, spine shows mild scuffing from label removal, few small chips to spine ends.  Rear paste down, Washington County Historical Society Presentation Plate.
