(No. 11338 ) March, Edgar J[ames]. SPRITSAIL BARGES OF THAMES AND MEDWAY.
Camden: International Marine Publishing Company, (1970). New Edition, Full
cloth, Quarto, xiv, 234 pages, black and white photographs, drawings. Very
good in a good dust jacket, Jacket in Mylar protector.
A picturesque survey of the grace, beauty, usefulness, and history of
river coasting, stumpie, mulie, and ketch barges along with details of their
construction. Includes many historic photographs. Appendices on barge and
sailing races from 1869 to 1938, 1950 to 1963, barge building yards, etc.
This copy belonged to naval architect and ship historian Thomas C. Gillmer,
with his bookplate on front pastedown and his ownership inscription on front
free endpapers. Bound in rust colored cloth over boards with spine titled in
gilt. Some minor wear. Gillmer cut a "window" into the jacket at lower
spine, barely slicing underlying cloth as well. Jacket spine is also mildly
browned and there are a couple of closed tears to rear panel....... $75.00
