ed. (Geneva): Antoine Chuppin. 1585. 8vo. (68),427,(15)pp. Index & Errata. Two
leaves of the index misbound. Lacking the folding woodcut plate. Text
illustrated with 8 full-page woodcuts, and with 5 pages of musical notation. 17th
century calf, gilt spine. Extremities a bit rubbed, but overall quite
sound. Text with occasional old soiling, the final leaves with a brown stain
along the top margin. Starting at around p. 370, a small wormhole slowly
enlarges to affect (at worst) a portion of the last 3 lines of text at the bottom
of the page; the readability of some words is affected. $2,500.00 (trade
discount allowed)
An important early work (the first ed. is 1578) on Brazil and the author's
experiences with its native peoples. The third ed. of 1585. is notable for
being the first to present the famous melodies (music) by Lery, called "the
first Brazilian musical document in existence." See Borba de Moraes I p. 403.
