      Scarce biography of this prolific Victorian journalist and writer. 
"Gath," as Townsend signed himself, was the youngest war correspondent 
during the American Civil War. His dispatches from the Battle of Five Forks 
and the days following Lincoln's assassination drew national attention. He 
became an important writer during the Reconstruction era. On his estate near 
the Antietam battlefield in western Maryland he built the War Correspondents 
Arch, now within Gathland State Park. This is one of 125 copies of this 
book, INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Ruthanna Hindes on front free endpaper. Prior 
owner embossed name at top fore corner of same leaf. Bound in dark blue 
cloth over boards with spine and upper board titled in gilt. Slight 
extremity rubs....... $100.00
