TITLE: “Tradition & Modernity in Metalwork”

By Sir Lawrence Weaver.
Published in Birmingham & London by The Birmingham Guild in 1928.

DISCUSSION: A survey of the recent (as of 1928) work in metal, especially
architectural work, of The Birmingham Guild, an amalgamation of the
Birmingham Guild of Handicrafts and several commercial firms. It is based
on an article he wrote for ‘The Architectural Review’, with an added
postscript and tipped-in plates. The Birmingham Guild of Handicraft had
been formed in 1890 as an arts & crafts society, producing furniture,
metalware, and finely-printed books. Financial difficulties forced a
merger with E & R Gittins in 1905, and with Hart, Son & Pearl in 1919.
Despite its more commercial focus, Weaver argues that the Guild retained
the highest aesthetic standards, and goes on to note that, “The Guild had
so sound a core of aesthetic sense that it steered clear of the wave of
‘l’art nouveau’, which drove most Birmingham metalworkers into an ugly
riot of hearts and tulips in coarse repousse”.

So there.

Sir Lawrence Weaver [1876–1930] was a British architectural writer of
books and articles, which appeared in such leading journals as Country
Life, Architectural Review, The Burlington Magazine, and Art Workers
Quarterly. He was made Architectural Editor of Country Life in 1910, and
was a tireless advocate of the Arts and Crafts Movement and such
architects as Sir Edwin Lutyens. Weaver had written a prior study,
“Modernity in Plasterwork”, which is readily acquired, but this survey of
metalwork is very uncommon.
