Carlyle, Thomas. A.L.S. 8vo. 2-1/2 pages. Dated “Chelsea, 4 Feb. 1845.”
Apparently written to the editor of the Westminster Review, who was W.
E. Hickson, at this time, in regard to a previous letter of
recommendation for a “Mr. Phillips.” Carlyle wants to clarify his
relationship to the man and to make sure that he hasn’t recommended
someone who he knows only slightly. He states, “but I have no right to
assist one man by stealing the time and patience of another.”

An interesting letter reflecting the author’s thoughtfulness and
concern about being misunderstood.
