Coventry, Henry. PHILEMON TO HYDASPES: OR, THE HISTORY OF FALSE
RELIGION IN THE EARLIER PAGAN WORLD: Related in a Series of
Conversations. The Third Edition. London: Printed for Daniel Browne.
1753. 5 parts in 1, each part with its own title-page.

headpieces. Cont. calf, a bit rubbed, brown morocco spine
label. $450.00 (trade discount allowed)
The most complete edition with all five parts bound together. The five
parts were originally published 1738-1744. Mysticism as a category
surfaced for the first time in the English language with the
publication of Philemon to Hydaspes: Or, the History of False Religion
(1736) by Henry Coventry (ca. 1710-1752). In this book Coventry
critiqued the term mystical theology and introduced the term
"mysticism" to the Enlightenment thinkers.
