Meyler, Anthony. OBSERVATIONS ON VENTILATION... Lectures Delivered on
This Subject at the Request of the Dublin Society... Longmam [sic],
Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown. N.D. (1822). (6),208pp. No half-title.
BOUND WITH: Higgins, William. EXPERIMENTS AND OBSERVATIONS ON THE
ATOMIC THEORY, AND ELECTRICAL PHENOMENA. Dublin: Graisberry and
Campbell. 1814. (4),180pp. A few text diagrams. No half-title. Both
works bound together in 19th century calf over marbled boards, hinges a
bit rubbed. This copy with the ink signature of John Lort Stokes
(1812-1885), a British Admiral who served on the Beagle with Charles
Darwin. $1,000.00 (trade discount allowed)
First editions of two interesting studies by Irish scientists. The 
second work is "an
attack on Dalton, whom the author claimed to have anticipated" (Duveen
p. 294). Wheeler Gift 722. This copy owned by Stokes who served in
various capacities on board the Beagle, including Mate & Assistant
Surveyor, 1831 to 1836, during which period Darwin was naturalist on
board. Stokes served nearly 18 years with the Beagle and during 1841-43
he was in command of the vessel.
