Ardwight Chamberlain
L.A.

[Voltaire:] Henriade. An Epick Poem. In Ten Canto’s. Translated from
the French into English Blank Verse. To which are now added, the
Argument to each Canto, and Large Notes Historical and Critical.
London: Printed for C. Davis, in Pater-Noster-Row, 1732. FIRST
EDITION. Bound in modern quarter calf and marbled boards, spine with
raised bands and titles in gilt; 8vo; vi + [20] + 311 + [1] pp.;
woodcut decorations, engraved frontispiece. Foxon L215; ESTC T137613.
First edition, one of only 1000 copies printed, of this English
translation by John Lockman — 'l'illustre Lockman" as Voltaire's
French followers dubbed him. Handsome quarter calf binding with some
modest wear to the edges. A previous owner (or more likely his/her
offspring) has neatly but inexplicably hand-tinted parts of the
frontispiece and title-page in yellow; translator's name added in ink
to the title; a few occasional small spots, some dust-soiling to the
top edges, otherwise the contents are very bright, crisp and clean,
firmly bound. Front paste-down with the bookplate of author and
scholar Louis I. Bredvold (The Brave New World of the Enlightenment;
The Philosophy of Edmund Burke; etc.).
