Edition. To which is added a Preface, containing a General Account of  
the Life, Character, and Writings of the Author. London: Printed for  
John and Paul Knapton, 1738. Bound in full period calf, 4to (25.5 x 20  
cm); xv, [1], 5-219, [5] p.; engraved frontispiece by Vertue, woodcut  
decorations. ESTC N69224.
Binding rather worn and rubbed, front hinge cracked but the front  
board is held by the cords; first (blank) front endpaper loose;  
possibly lacking the advertisement leaf; mild darkening/foxing to the  
top edge of the text block; a few occasional small spots and touches  
of soiling; otherwise contents are unusually bright and fresh. Early/ 
contemporary owner's signature of Hercules Sharpe; another early  
signature crossed out on the front paste-down. An uncommon edition of  
this treatise on deism and "natural theology," an important influence  
on the Founding  Fathers (Benjamin Franklin, Jefferson, et al), among  
others: ESTC locates only two copies in U.S. libraries and only one in  
the UK.
