TITLE: “The Ming Gap and Shipwreck Ceramics in Southeast Asia. Towards a
Chronology of the Thai China Trade”

By Rozanna Maude Brown.
Published by The Siam Society in 2009.

DISCUSSION: The so-called “Ming Gap” refers to a lack of Chinese export
ceramics, specifically Chinese blue & white wares, between about 1352 and
1488, a period when export bans were implemented by early Ming Dynasty
rulers. The lack of Chinese exports resulted in an increase in export
ceramic production in Siam, Vietnam and other southeast Asian countries,
and Dr. Brown spent many years examining the results of some 120 excavated
shipwrecks of the period and analyzing the types of ceramic wares carried
on those ships. Dr. Brown returned to the United States in 1999 and
embarked upon her doctoral dissertation on this subject at UCLA. Her
dissertation, coming near the end of her career, was intended for
publication as a book from the start, and the project was completed by her
colleagues after her untimely death. A pioneering study, well illustrated
and documented.
