P. Putnam & Co., 1853. First Edition. Two volumes bound in contemporary
half morocco and boards with morocco corners, with the first volume in
brown morocco and marbled boards and the second volume in black morocco
and black boards, covering the entire year of 1853. Contains the first
printing of Melville's classic "Bartleby the Scrivener" as well as a
lengthy article on Melville by George W. Curtis and three chapters from
Thoreau's EXCURSION TO CANADA. Also contains engraved views of New York
City from lost daguerreotypes and articles on the Mormons, Hawaii, and
Cuba, illustrated with woodcuts. The second volume has an early owner
name and bookplate with a library stamp on the title page. Clean, Very
