TITLE: “Italian Ceramic Art. The Albarello, A Study in Early Renaissance
Maiolica with illustrations”

By Henry Wallis.
Published in London by Bernard Quaritch in 1904. Edition limited to 250
copies.

DISCUSSION: Albarello were tall jars used most often by apothecaries for
dry drugs or ointments, the origin of the design most probably being the
Islamic Middle East. The specimens here are Italian maiolica wares of the
15th century, representing all the types that could be found by the
indefatigable Henry Wallis as he scoured the cases of museums and private
collectors. Wallis wrote many books on Italian and Middle Eastern
ceramics, and if anyone had the background and resources to conduct such a
survey, he certainly did.

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 7”x9”, xxix pages of text plus 117 monochrome
plates printed in sepia tones.

CONDITION NOTES: Minor wear, cream-colored cloth covers with some light
soil, darkened spine with a mark on it, and slightly bowed covers.
Otherwise clean and nice, with a tight binding.

PRICE: $125 net
