To Which is Added, Three Dissertations,  Jesus Christ, John The Baptist, James The Just, God's Command To Abraham, etc., with An Index To The Whole, And Copper-Plates. Works: Life of Flavius Josephus, The Antiquities of the Jews, The Wars of the Jews, Discourse concerning Hades, Three Dissertations, Tables of Jewish Weights and Measures, particularly of those mentioned in Josephus' Works. Index. Volume I. Frontispiece, engraving of Josephus, “1801, C. Picart sculpt.” Pale damp stain down half the engraving, however this is a very deep and rich engraving. Off-setting from image to title page. Fold-out map, three designated areas: "A Map of such Places mentioned in the New Testament, as were in Greece, Cyrus, Asia, etc.", "A Map of several Regions mentioned in the New Testament together with the Cities & Towns most remote from the Holy Land," "A New Map of the several Countries Cities Towns etc., mentioned in the New Testament as were in the Holy Land and parts adjoining.+ This mark is to show that the names so marked are not in the New Testament". Pale damp stain to upper area, no other defects, strong print, "Published Oct 17th 1801 by Verner and Hood no. 31 Poultry, London. Volume II. Fold-out Map: "Plan of Jerusalem from the most approved Authorities," with number key side bar designating 57 areas, titled "Explanation". "London, Published July 1st. 1806 by Lackington, Allen & Co.". Pale edge foxing, and damps stains to lower margin corners. William Whiston (1667-1752), Leicestershire, England, Anglican priest, mathematician, professor, theologian, historian. He succeeded Sir Isaac Newton as Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge in 1703, in 1710 he was dismissed due to his 'Arian' views. In 1737 he translated the writings of Josephus. Very Good. 1/4 cloth.
Volumes I. & III. have random pale damp stains to edges and gutter, text and font very rich, majority of pages clean and bright. Printed on heavy weight paper. Original tan paper boards, rubbing to extremities, moderate soil and rubbing. Contents listed alphabetically. Originally published in 1762. Last chapter titled, "The Dimension and True Figure of the Earth Determined". Richard Brookes, M.D ., England, 1721–1763, was a physician, and author. He also published various translations and compilations on medical studies and other subjects. 
Full brown calf, red leather title panel to spine with gilt title. Rubbing of boards and extremities, ding to front board side edge. Hinges cracked, front board shaky, chips to front joint edges. Mild toning of text, light foxing, very readable, few pages have lighter type than others. Spotty foxing to e.p., rear f.e.p. lateral crease. All maps intact, no tears. Text block tight in covers, clean. Previous owners name with 1786 date to front paste-down. A very presentable copy of this work. tall 8 vo,. xvi, 700 + pages. In archival clear wraps . VG PP 185.00

Ex-library plate to paste downs from "The Historical Socitety of Pennsylvania," 1907. Front hinge looks repaired. Grey marbled e.p. Very clean text and illustrations.
