The Poetical Works of Percy Bysshe Shelley. Edited by Mrs. Shelley.
London: Edward Moxon, 1839. FIRST EDITION. Four volumes, small 8vos
(17 cm) in full polished plum calf with gilt-tooled rules, spines and
spine labels, marbled endpapers and page edges; 380, 347, 314, 361
pp.; frontispiece in vol. I, half-title in vol. II, terminal leaf of
publisher's adverts in vol. III.
First collected edition of Shelley's works, edited by his widow, Mary
Wollstonecraft Shelley. Her preface and, most especially, her notes to
the poems were/are invaluable to the Shelley collector and scholar.
Bindings show light wear, a few scratches, mild darkening to the
spines, some uneven sunning to several of the boards, rubbing to the
joints; two exterior hinges just starting at the ends, but the boards
are secure; title-page of vol. I somewhat tanned from the
frontispiece, stain to four leaves in vol. III, a few (very few) small
spots elsewhere; otherwise contents are very clean and fresh, firmly
bound. An appealing copy of an important set.
