pastedown from the State of Connecticut Veterans
Home, small "Withdrawn" stamp beneath it and an
old library pocket to inner rear cover; no
external (or any other) library markings. Quite a
fresh copy, nearly fine. ¶ Fictionalized
biographical novel of Victoria Ka?iulani
Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kawekiu i Lunalilo Cleghorn
(18751899), Crown Princess of Hawai'i and
successor to the throne before the overthrow of
the Hawai'ian monarchy in 1893. Princess
Ka?iulani was intelligent, gifted and beautiful,
she died at the young age of 23, she is beloved
of the Hawai'ian people to this day. $145.00

Issued as Extra Series Vol III. of Trubner's
English and Foreign Philosophical Library Series.
Octavo, original slate-blue cloth titled and
decorated in black and gold. [8] pp ads at front,
247 pp, folding chart at rear. Deals with the
Polynesian creation myths, Tattooing,
Superstition, Cannibalism, Human Sacrifice, plus
Hawaiian genealogies, etc, etc. The author was
Circuit Judge of the Island of Maui. From the
library of Charles Muses, with 4 small notes in
his hand on the recto of the rear endpaper.
Trifling rubbing to cloth at edges, a near fine,

lost race adventure novel, from the Stuart
Teitler collection of Lost Race Fiction. A
bizarre novel involving various weird, unknown

plates. 402 pp. Minor marks to the cloth, a very
sharp copy, nearly fine. ¶ A novel of ancient
Hawai'i before the coming of Europeans; much
folklore and some fantasy content. Considered to

stain on rear panel, a nice clean copy, very
good. ¶ Novel set in Hawai'i written by a retired
US Army Major, which appears to be both a study
of the hula dance as well as an autobiographical
memoir. Very Good. Hardcover. $45.00

[circa 1935]. First Edition, First Printing.
First edition. Square 12mo, original brown boards
with brown cloth spine, upper panel titled and
decorated in black. Photographic frontispiece
("Bananas and Cocoanuts, Honolulu"), one
additional b&w plate. 32 pp, nicely printed,
decorative initials throughout. Inscribed by the
author on the front free endpaper "To | Dr. and
Mrs. Dille | From | the author". Very good clean
copy. Rare. ¶ Poetry about Hawai'i, certainly
with a Christian slant. Very Good. Hardcover. $50.00

orange cloth stamped in blue and black. 218 pp.,
frontispiece and seven additional full-page black
& white plates, Index at rear. Minor dust soiling
to cloth, a near fine copy. ¶ Likely this would
more properly be titled "Hawaiian History and
Legends", as the two themes seem to be treated
separately. Near Fine. Hardcover. $35.00
12. WESTERVELT, W.D. LEGENDS OF GODS AND GHOSTS
(Hawaiian Mythology). Boston: Press of Geo. H.
Ellis Co. / London: Constable and Co. 1915. First
Edition, First Printing. First edition. Octavo,
original pictorial gray cloth blocked in black
and white with an image of an island coastline
with palm trees. 263 pp, Appendix, Glossary, 4 pp
of Press notices at end. Frontispiece with tissue
guard and 11 additional black & white plates
throughout the text, plus 2 tipped-in colour
plates (of Hawaiian Fish). Ex-lending library
copy, with a bookplate from the Libraries for
U.S. Soldiers and Sailers, American Library
Association, New England division, and a
rubberstamp stating "Given by Citizens of
Brookline, Massachussets" both on inner front
cover. Bookseller's ticket (torn) on front free
endpaper and old ink inscription partially
erased, evidence of label removed from rear
inner-cover, spine dull, a few stains to cloth.
Overall a very good copy, quite a bit better than
it sounds. ¶ A Collection of local Hawaiian
legends, nicely illustrated. A scarce book. Very
Good. Hardcover. $45.00
