N.Y., 1884.  Second printing of the revised, Ayres edition (first printed the preceding year).  Original brown cloth stamped in gilt and black, all edges gilt.  Approx. 6.5 x 4.5".  254 pages, [2] pages ads at rear.  A fine copy.
(Few writers had a more varied and inconsistent career than Cobbett. Got into trouble in the British Army in the Maritimes, fled to Phila., became the darling of the conservatives, fled to England as a result of Dr. Rush’s libel suit, became the darling of the radicals, settled down to expound on such controversial subjects as grammar.)

A fine copy in very good dust wrapper (spine sun-faded, minor wear, but no chips).  Complete with photographic frontispiece and three plates.  Koizumi recalls his boyhood.  His mother was a Japanese woman.  His father, the celebrated author, Lafcadio Hearn, died when he was 10 years old.
