(Few writers had a more varied and inconsistent career than Cobbett. Got into trouble in the British Army in the Maritimes, fled to Phila., became the darling of the conservatives, fled to England as a result of Dr. Rush’s libel suit, became the darling of the radicals, settled down to expound on such controversial subjects as grammar.)

His mother was a Japanese woman.  His father, the celebrated author, Lafcadio Hearn, died when he was 10 years old.
