Thackeray, William Makepeace (1811-1863). Two manuscripts: Autograph
Letter, Signed (ALS) to a gentleman, circa 1850s + Autograph Note, Signed
(ANS) to "Bristed," circa 1850s . . Original manuscripts. (1) ALS, one
page, duodecimo, from Richmond, Virginia, Saturday 19, no year, explaining
why he could not accept an invitation: "...I hope you and your ladies will
believe that I had a very bad headache on Thursday night, and a journey to
commence at 5 o'clock on Friday morning, otherwise I should certainly have
accepted your kindness....If I return to Washington I shall do myself the
pleasure of calling and asking their forgiveness....Yours very faithfully,
W.M. Thackeray." (2) ANS, 16mo, July 15, no year: expresses regrets that he
cannot dine with Bristed because "we go to Hamburg today or I should have
had much pleasure in dining with you..., W.M. Thackeray." Very Good.
