Smith, Edgar Fahs (1854-1928). Typewritten Letter, Signed (TLS) on his
University of Pennsylvania letterhead, Philadelphia, March 24, 1925. .
Original manuscript. In part: "My dear Dr. Thwing: I could not possibly
give you the date upon which the various chemical laboratories of the
country were established....The Chemical Society of Philadelphia [was]
founded in 1792...following by the Columbian Chemical Society in
1811....Robert Hare had a laboratory of his own as early as 1800; Benjamin
Silliman began his in 1805....James Woodhouse had a laboratory in which he
did excellent work as early as 1795....Faithfully yours, Edgar F. Smith."
Very Good.
Smith was a chemist, provost of UPenn, and a Sherlock Holmes expert.
