TITLE: “Graham’s Lady’s and Gentleman’s Magazine. Volume XXIII”

Edited by George R. Graham.
Published in Philadelphia by George R. Graham: July-December, 1843.

DISCUSSION: George Rex Graham’s Philadelphia-based Graham's Magazine
(which changed names slightly several times) was an early Victorian
periodical which started publication in 1841 and eventually ceased
publication in 1858. It was known for its short stories, critical reviews,
poetry & music, for which its contributors were generously paid, and was
also known for the high quality of its illustrations. Edgar Allan Poe was
an early editor, and it was in Graham’s that "The Murders in the Rue
Morgue", now recognized as the first detective story, was first published.
Poe was later succeeded by an editor who loathed him named Rufus Wilmot
Griswold, who rejected Poe’s new poem, "The Raven".

This 1843 volume features the usual selection of fiction, poetry, book
reviews and other material. The most interesting items may be the first
publication of James Fennimore Cooper’s biographical essay on John Paul
Jones which would later appear as a chapter in Cooper’s “Lives of
Distinguished American Naval Officers” (Philadelphia, 1846), and Edgar
Allan Poe’s book review of Cooper’s Revolutionary War novel “Wyandotte”.
