TITLE: “The New Universal Letter-Writer: or, Complete Art of Polite
Correspondence”

Published in Philadelphia by Claxton, Remsen & Haffelfinger in 1875.

DISCUSSION: “Containing a course of interesting letters on the most
important, instructive and entertaining subjects, to which is appended an
essay on letter-writing, and a set of complimental cards suited to
occasions on which an extraordinary degree of politeness should be
observed”.

Most of the sample letters are quite specific, and not a few are of the
type which might have made Anne Landers or Dear Abby tartly tell the
sender to “MYOB!”. For example- Letter from a Gentleman, to a Friend, on
the necessity of being Virtuous in New York; From a Father to his
Daughters, on Courtship and Coquettish Behavior, and so on. After reading
a number of these one does get a very good idea of the state of Victorian
family, business and social life, and will never again complain that the
fact that “people don’t write letters anymore” is a bad thing.

A re-issue of a popular title first published by Lippincott in 1856 and
re-issued by them several times in the 1850s and 1860s. This appears to be
the first and only Claxton edition, and OCLC only locates 4 examples.

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 4.5”x7”, [vii] 216 pages. Pictorial board covers.

CONDITION NOTES: The covers have a little wear and rubbing (please see the
photos, above and below). The interior has some minor soil, but otherwise
is clean and nice, with a tight binding.

PRICE: $85 -
