Vicesimus Knox: Essays Moral and Literary. London: Printed for Charles Dilly, 1791. Two volumes, small 8vos; early/original calf, rebacked, modern leather spine labels, modern endpapers. Front paste-downs of both volumes with the printed labels: "From the Library of Thomas Hardy, O.M. Max Gate."

This is presumably the very set listed in Michael Millgate's Catalogue of an Attempted Reconstruction of Thomas Hardy’s Library at Max Gate: "Knox, Vicesimus. Essays Moral and Literary. 2 vols. London, 1791" (University of Toronto Library). The majority of Hardy's library was dispersed after his widow's death at the legendary Max Gate Sale held at Hodgson & Co. in 1938. Wear to the edges of the original boards, mild age-toning to the leaves, a few leaves bumped at the corners, otherwise clean and sound, firmly bound.
