ARISTOTLE’S MASTER-PIECE . . . THE SECRETS OF GENERATION ... [&] A PRIVATE LOOKING-GLASS FOR THE FEMALE SEX ...
London: “Smith, Jones & Co.” 1838. Original ribbed cloth, 6-1/2 X 3-1/2 inches, rear cover lightly soiled, a well-preserved copy of this "under the counter" sex manual. Fronts-portrait and one woodcut, of a human anomaly. 142 pages. The imprint is, of course, fictitious, and the book may, indeed, have been printed in this country. OCLC locates only 3 copies (Harvard Medical Libr., Brown, U. Vt.) ("Marriage, insufficiency in men and women, monstrous births, midwives, the womb, the genitals, copulation, maladies of the womb, cure, &c, &c.") All editions of this work tend to be scarce. Being cheaply produced, they are often in tatters - this copy being a happy exception. $200.00
GRAFFIGNY, MADAME [FRANCOISE P. H., de.]
LETTRES D'UNE PERUVIENNE.
Lyon, 1787. 12mo, old decorated boards, calf spine, rubbed but sound. Complete with half title and approbation leaf, (the latter not noted by OCLC, which locates only 4 copies of this rather scarce little edition.) 356, [2] pages. (Novel of the Incan woman, Zelia, Virgin of the Sun, in which the author's comments on French manners and customs are combined with a mild element of romance. This work helped to popularize the epistolary novel. Madame Graffigny's Paris salon was a meeting place for free-thinking men and women, including Rousseau & Helvetius.)
