John C. Yorston & Co., 1897. First Edition. Quarto (7-1/4" x 10") in the 
original gray cloth with gilt lettering, top edge gilt others uncut and 
largely unopened. [2], 350 pages. A scarce memorial volume that "is a 
record of the spontaneous expression of grief and surprise evoked by the 
unexpected death of Frederick Douglass" (Preface). Collects Obsequies at 
both Washington, D.C. and Rochester, N.Y., including one by Elizabeth 
Cady Stanton (read by Susan B. Anthony), as well as letters with 
facsimile signatures by Booker T. Washington, Susan B. Anthony, and 
others. Also includes various preambles and resolutions, poems 
(including one by Paul Lawrence Dunbar), memorial service addresses and 
sermons, tributes from the press, reminiscences, and a 12-page 
biographical sketch. Covers evenly soiled; contents have an old 
dampstain in the lower right margin throughout, to varying degrees, but 
with little detrimental effect. Very Good copy of a scarce book.
