Debrett's Peerage of England, Scotland, and Ireland: Containing an account of all the peers, whether by tenure, summons, or creation; their collateral branches, births, marriages, and issue; family names, and the titles of eldest sons; a complete and alphabetical arrangement of their mottoes, with correct translations; extinct, forfeited, and dormant peerages; an account of the different orders of knighthood in the three kingdoms; with a list of persons who have received the honor of knighthood during the present reign. London: Printed for J. Debrett [et al], September 1802. First edition thus. Two volumes, 12mo (14.5 cm), bound in period tree calf, rebacked, with later morocco spine labels stamped in gilt; lviii + 731 pp.; additional engraved title-page, frontispiece, and 104 engraved plates (96 numbered plates and 8 lettered).

The go-to resource for every well-bred nineteenth-century parent concerned about the pedigree of a prospective son-in-law. Of particular interest today for its illustrations of hundreds of coats of arms, its glossary and diagrams of heraldic terms and devices, orders, coronets, etc. Volume I deals with the Peerage of England and volume II with the Peerages of Scotland and Ireland. Light rubbing and wear to the edges of the boards, mild age-toning to the text leaves, a hint of toning to the top edges of the plates; otherwise clean and sound, firmly bound. Early/contemporary ownership signatures of M. Bouchery on the front flyleaves. A handsome set, complete with all the plates. Curiously uncommon: OCLC locates only three copies of this edition in U.S. libraries and institutions, and only one in the UK.
