*Offered*: *Travels in the Congo* by Andre Gide. First edition thus, *Signed

*Gide, Andre.* *Travels in the Congo* [*Signed*]; Voyage au Congo [Signee].
New York: Modern Age Books, Inc., 1937. First edition thus. A Very Good
copy of the first Modern Age Books edition, first printing, in the
Publisher's original stiff card wrappers (modest creasing and a touch of
toning to the spine), in a Very Good dust jacket (a chip to the spine tail
and one to the bottom of the rear panel, light wear at the spine head,
short split at each end of the front flap fold, center split to rear flap
fold mended with tape to jacket's interior, mild age toning to the spine
panels), SIGNED BY ANDRE GIDE on the half-title; originally published in
French (1929) and first published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1929 (an edition
which itself is rather uncommon in the market), the book presents a record
of Gide's travels in the Congo, including information on the French and
Belgian colonial administrations, and on the life, religion, customs, and
morality of the indigenous people. Gide won the 1947 Nobel Prize in
Literature for "his comprehensive and artistically significant writings, in
which human problems and conditions have been presented with a fearless
love of truth and keen psychological insight". Signed copies of Gide's
limited editions in English translation are readily available, but signed
copies of his trade editions in English translation are not at all common.
A Very Good copy of an interesting travel book from one of the world's most
prominent sowers of spiritual anxiety, SIGNED BY ANDRE GIDE. SIGNEE.
RARE. Very Good in very good dust-jacket. Hardcover. (#00002922)
