TITLE: “The Works of James Gillray, The Caricaturist; with the History of
His Life and Times”

Edited by Thomas Wright.
Published in London by Chato and Windus in 1873.

DISCUSSION:James Gillray [1756-1815], was a British caricaturist and
printmaker famous for his satirical prints commenting on political and
social issues and figures of his day. He was most active between 1792 and
1810, and is considered to be among history’s most influential political
caricaturists. Many of his wittiest satires were at the expense of George
III, who, after examining some of Gillray's sketches, said "I don't
understand these caricatures." Gillray began suffering episodes of madness
in 1811, and died on 1 June 1815.

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover. 9”x11”, 376 pages, black & white plates and
illustrations throughout. Publisher’s red cloth with black and gold
decoration.

CONDITION NOTES: Covers rather worn, chipped and soiled, some internal
soil, endsheets wrinkled, the signatures from pages 151 through 172 have
separated from the binding.
