DREISER, Theodore. AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY Inscribed to Mrs. Claude Bowers.
New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First Edition. Two volumes in original
cloth-backed blue boards. Copy #68 of 795 sets SIGNED by the author on
the limitation page. In addition this copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by
the author on the half-title page: "Mrs. Claude (Sybil) Bowers/the
social & political/advisor to/'Jefferson & Hamilton'/from/Theodore
Dreiser/N.Y. April- 1926." The book Dreiser alludes to is JEFFERSON AND
HAMILTON: THE STRUGGLE FOR DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA (1925) by Claude Bowers,
a political manifesto that denounced the Federalist/Whig/Republican
parties as bastions of aristocracy and hailed the Democrats as true
heroes. In this book and others Bowers promoted the idea that Thomas
Jefferson had founded the Democratic Party. President Franklin D.
Roosevelt, an avid reader of Bowers, built the Jefferson Memorial. Crack
to text block at limitation page, as often the case; spines slightly
darkened. Near Fine set in a Very Good, intact slipcase. Uncommon in
this condition and genuinely scarce when inscribed.
Dreiser based this novel on a true Adirondack story that has also
inspired plays, an opera, and the film A PLACE IN THE SUN starring
Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor. In July 1906, a young man took
his pregnant girlfriend boating on Big Moose Lake. The next day her body
was found floating in a secluded cove. The murder weapon--an antique
tennis racket--was lost for many years after the conviction of the
murderer and only recently rediscovered in June 2006. (#016424)
