VELPEAU, Alf. A. L. M.  A TREATISE ON SURGICAL ANATOMY; OR THE ANATOMY OF REGIONS, CONSIDERED IN ITS RELATIONS WITH SURGERY. In two volumes.  N.Y.: Wood, 1830.  1st of this edition. Old full rubbed calf, some worn spots, but a sound set. Translated from the French, with additional notes by John W. Sterling, MD. Errata on page [xxiii] of Volume I and on page (524) of volume II. Fourteen folding lithographed plates on heavy paper; nicely printed by "Pendleton's Lithography," but moderately foxed. Library bookplates on front paste-downs (with "withdrawn" stamp) and small library blind stamp in top margin of  title pages. Velpeau performed the first attempt at an operative treatment for an aneurysm, and was, according to Garrison-Morton, "the leading French surgeon of the first half of the 19th Century." Uncommon.  $60

FRESCHOT, Casimiro.  ORIGINE PROGRESSI, E RUINA DEL CALVINISMO NELLA FRANCIA, FAGGUAGLIO ISTORICO.
Parma, 1693.  Bound in limp boards with hand-lettered paper title label on spine. 8-1/2 x 6 inches; 360 pages. Attractive frontis, with title page vignette, ornate initial caps. Former owner's name etc., on blank area of 1st page of dedication, with bleed through, and written on three other pages as well. Also, place name inked on p.1. Among his other works, Freschot wrote the "Histoire amoureuse et badine du Congres et de la ville. d' Utrecht, en plusieurs lettres." A scarce early book on the history of Calvinism in France.  $80

[MELIODORUS, ET AL].  AMOURS DE THEAGENES ET CHARICLEE. HISTOIRE ETHIOPIQUE. 2 Volumes.  Geneva, 1782.
Two attractively bound little volumes in green leather with gilt rules on front covers and ornately decorated spine with red title labels. Some rubbing to joints,  heads and heals of the spines, and the corners a little worn. Small wormhole in Volume 2 from front cover front pages, but not affecting text. Approx. 4-3/4 x 2-1/2 inches. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Frontis copperplate engraving in Volume I by Marillier from the art of Delignon. OCLC lists 2 copies only in the U.S. The story of an Ethiopian princess abandoned by her mother because the child was white-skinned and would have aroused the suspicions of the King. The earliest extant Greek Romance.  $60

TERENCE.  COMEDIES, TRADUITE EN FRANCOIS, AVEC LE LATIN A COSTE . . .   Paris, 1677.  8th edition, with corrections and notes. Bound in old mottled leather with gilt decoration and raised bands on spine. All edges decoratively spattered red. Approx 6 x 3-1/2 inches. Cover edges a little rubbed and spine quite worn, lacking small sections at the base. Front joint cracked. Old owner's signatures on front free endpaper. Frontis portrait. Translated by  L. I. le Maistre de Sacy?? OCLC LOCATES ONLY 1 COPY (National Library of Spain.)  Very scarce edition. $50

SATII, ROGERTI TITII, HIERONYMI AVANTII, JANI DOUSAE PATRIS & FIILII, THEODORI MARCILII, NEC NON SELECTIS ALIORUM.  Utrecht, 1680. Full vellum binding with hand-lettering on spine.  Approx 8 x 4-1/2 inches;  [24]; 638; [2] 662; [66] pages. Two volumes in one, (second part has half-title only). Additional engraved title page. With 66 pages of Index at end. Front blank with old writing on it.  Front inner joint reinforced, front and rear pages darkening a bit. A sound copy of these Latin classics.  $110
